Brand new, original photograph by John Gates

It was an October day in 2012. The weather had been overcast for several days, but the weatherman predicted clearing skies after noon. Just after a storm front passes through can be a great time for landscape photography. The air is clear, and there can be beautiful skies during the transition from overcast to partly sunny. So at noon I headed out with all my camera gear.

I drove up to Speculator, around Lake Pleasant, then down to Piseco and around Piseco Lake. By mid-afternoon it was still overcast with no sign of changing. Disappointed by the weather, I headed down Old Piseco Road towards Stratford, found a nice spot along East Canada Creek, and threw in a line hoping to scare up a trout. As evening approached, no trout, no Sun, and it wasn't looking good. But just about a half hour before sunset, a break in the clouds appeared!

I knew right where I wanted to be - at the site of the old Avery's Hotel and Game Preserve. Jumped in my car and raced down old Piseco Road to Stratford, up to Pine Lake, and then up Route 10 to this spot. I've wanted to get this shot for years, but I needed just the right conditions to realize my vision of what this landscape could be.

I arrived just as the sun was setting behind me. The clouds broke up nicely, and now it was a race to get out the tripod, set up my gear, and get the shot before it got dark! I'm quite pleased with this shot, and consider my efforts to be successful. My only regret is that the day didn't end with a fresh Trout dinner.

Adirondack Prints Incorporated offers prints and framed prints from throughout the Adirondack Park, featuring the award winning photography of John Gates.

At over six million acres, upstate New York's Adirondack Park is the largest park in the continental 48 states. About three million acres within the park are designated as "Forever Wild" wilderness areas.

Several years ago, photographer John Gates started offering his unique Adirondack pictures under the Adirondack Prints brand.

The sheer size of the Adirondack Park (larger than the State of Vermont), with about 100 peaks over 1,200 feet and over 2,000 lakes, provides a limitless supply of picture opportunities for anyone who loves photographing the great outdoors.

Mr. Gates's pictures are very popular at gift shops, galleries, and art shows, and have won numerous awards. While his style and technique are always evolving, the diversity of his subjects continues. In his own words, "The opportunities for fine art photography are infinite. The pictures are always there, all around us, every day. The biggest challenge is to slow down our lives, our brains, enough to see the beautiful pictures that are right in front us."
